Weighted-curriculum education
Weighted-curriculum education emphasises a certain subject or subject area. An aptitude test is always needed to apply for these classes. The options for weighted-curriculum education are digital visual arts, performance arts, visual arts, Latin, physical education, physical education and home economics, nature and science, mathematics, mathematics and natural sciences, media education, music, modern dance, art expression, dance, movement and expression, dance arts, technology education and communications.

English-language basic education
All teaching is provided in English. Only the compulsory Finnish language and literature studies are studied in Finnish. An English-language class is always applied for through a language test. Pupils who have previously been in English-language education can apply for a place through the continuous admission process. English-language education is available at certain Finnish-language schools.

Bilingual education
About 25–50% of teaching is provided in the target language and the rest in Finnish. Bilingual teaching is available in Finnish-Swedish, Finnish–Spanish, Finnish–Chinese, Finnish–Northern Sámi, Finnish–Russian and Finnish–Estonian. Bilingual education is available at certain Finnish-language schools.
A place in a bilingual class is usually applied for through a language test. If the pupil has participated in bilingual Finnish–English education in another school or city, they can apply for a place in a Finnish–English class around the year through the continuous admission process.

English-enriched education
About 10–25% of education is in English and the rest in Finnish. English-enriched instruction is available in a few local schools. If one of these is your child’s local school, you can enrol your child in English-enriched instruction.

Swedish-language immersion
The teaching is partly in Swedish and partly in Finnish. Teaching is provided in a Finnish-speaking school, and the pupils taking part in language immersion education must also know Finnish. The language immersion path starts in daycare centre and must be started in pre-primary education at the latest. After pre-primary education, the language immersion path will continue until the end of ninth grade.
