The Public Works Committee and the Public Works Department operating under its supervision are responsible for the design, construction management and maintenance of streets and green areas in Helsinki, as well as the design, construction and repair of office and other facilities used by the City.
The Public Works Committee directs and supervises the activities of the Public Works Department. Among other things, the Committee defines the objectives for the Department’s operations for each year and monitors their attainment. Additionally, all plans for individual streets and parks are submitted for approval to the Committee which also passes the final decisions on construction projects and any major purchases. The proposals presented to the Committee are prepared by civil servants in the Public Works Department.
The Public Works Committee is an elective body whose members, totalling 9, and their alternates, are appointed by the City Council for a term of four years. Within the administrative organisation of the City, the Public Works Committee and Public Works Department are part of the Public Works and Environmental Affairs headed by Deputy Mayor Pekka Sauri.
Issues affecting the Public Works Department that are beyond the powers of the Committee are decided by the City Government or City Council. The City Government is also authorised to review any decision made by the Committee.
The Public Works Committee meets on Tuesdays at 15.00.
