City of Helsinki Education Department considers it important that both students as well as their parents are able to participate in the development of schoolwork. Participation of youths is supported in the Ruuti in Helsinki Project where youths themselves can influence the improvement of their school environment.

The voice of both the young as well as the parents is heard in the boards. The boards guide and develop the operation of schools and educational institutes. They also function as links to the surrounding society.
