Breast cancer screening

Breast cancer screening, that is, mammography, is aimed at detecting breast cancer at an early stage by using low-energy X-rays to examine the breasts. Breast cancer is the most frequent type of cancer among women.

The City of Helsinki offers free-of-charge breast cancer screenings at two-year intervals to all women ages 50-68. On alternating years all women born either in an even or an odd year are invited to mammography screenings by personal letter.

Both breasts are examined with a purpose-built X-ray device. The screenings can detect masses not detected by hand. The mammography nurse compresses one breast at a time in the X-ray device. The compression may be somewhat unpleasant but it takes only seconds. If the breasts are exceptionally sensitive, for example, just before the period, it is recommended that the screening is moved to another time.

The City of Helsinki's breast cancer screenings are done by Synlab (Fredrikinkatu 48, 00100 Helsinki).

You will receive an invitation letter states the date and time of the screening. If the time is not convenient, you can change it according to the instructions in the letter.
