Services for a person with an autism spectrum disorder

Services for a person with an autism spectrum disorder are organised as services based on the Disability Act, Intellectual Disability Act, Informal Care Act and Social Welfare Act.

A majority of people with an autism spectrum disorder will receive their services through other services than those specifically intended for people with an autism spectrum disorder. Intellectually disabled, autistic customers will be granted their housing services and day or work activity services, based on the Intellectual Disability Act, from the group homes of Developmental Disabilities Services or their day and work activity centres.

Housing services
Housing services are arranged for intellectually disabled people with an autism spectrum disorder, based on the Intellectual Disability Act, by group homes operated by the Developmental Disabilities Services. For other people with autism spectrum disorders, housing services are arranged mainly as purchased services, based on the Social Welfare Act. Together with the customer and his or her loved ones, a social worker will assess the need for housing services and propose the service to be purchased. When assessing the need for housing services, one evaluated factor is how much assistance or support the person needs for housing, for example.

Work and day activities
Work and day activities are organised for people with an autism spectrum disorder in work and day activity centres, either based on the Intellectual Disability Act or the Social Welfare Act. Work and day activities are either provided by the city or arranged as purchased services. A social worker will assess the need for work and day activities, together with the customer and his or her loved ones.
