There has been no published estimate of the number of insect species in Helsinki. Favourable habitats for insects in the city include parks, gardens, roadsides and wasteland, because of their wide variety of vegetation and favourable light and heat conditions.

Around 5,200 two-winged species (e.g. flies and mosquitoes) live in Finland, around 3,600 species of beetle, around 2,380 species of lepidoptera and around 5,700 species of hymenoptera (such as bees, wasps and ants).
