In which order are the streets ploughed?

Streets, pavements and bike lanes are divided into three maintenance classes based on street classification and the amount of traffic on the route.

Roadway ploughing

Class I roadways are ploughed when the thickness of the layer of snow exceeds 5 cm or there is more than 3 cm of slush. If snowfall stops between 4:00 am and 6:00 pm, the street will be ploughed within three hours. If snowfall stops between 6:00 pm and 4:00 am, the street will be ploughed before the commuter traffic starts in the morning, i.e. by 7 am.

Class II roadways are ploughed when the thickness of the layer of snow has exceeded 5 cm or there is more than 3 cm of slush. If snowfall stops between 3:00 am and 4:30 pm, the street will be ploughed within four hours. If snowfall stops between 4:30 pm and 3:00 am, the street will be ploughed before the commuter traffic starts in the morning, i.e. by 7 am.

Class III roadways are ploughed when the thickness of the layer of snow has exceeded 7 cm or there is more than 5 cm of slush. The street will be ploughed within 72 hours (three days). There is no obligation to plough on Saturdays and Sundays.

Ploughing pavements and bike routes

Class A pavements and bike routes are ploughed when the thickness of the layer of snow has exceeded 5 cm or there is more than 3 cm of slush. If snowfall stops between 3:00 am and 5:00 pm, the street will be ploughed within four hours. If snowfall stops between 5:00 pm and 3:00 am, the route will be ploughed before the commuter traffic starts in the morning, i.e. by 7 am.

Class B pavements and bike routes are ploughed when the thickness of the layer of snow has exceeded 5 cm or there is more than 3 cm of slush. If snowfall stops between 6:00 am and 5:00 pm, the street will be ploughed within four hours. If snowfall stops between 5:00 pm and 3:00 am, the route will be ploughed before the commuter traffic starts in the morning, i.e. by 7 am.

Class C pavements and bike routes are ploughed when the thickness of the layer of snow has exceeded 5 cm or there is more than 5 cm of slush. If snowfall stops between 4:00 am and 1:00 pm, the street will be ploughed within eight hours. If snowfall stops between 1:00 pm and 4:00 am, the street will be ploughed by noon the next day.

Please note that not all routes in parks and green areas are maintained in the winter!

Example 1: Snowfall stops at 6 pm, meaning that class I and II roadways and class A pavements and bike routes will be ploughed by 7 am; class B routes will be ploughed by 10 am and class C routes by noon, all the following day. Class III roadways will be ploughed within three days.

Example 2: Snowfall stops at 5 pm, meaning that roadways in other classes are ploughed as above, but class I roadways are ploughed by 8 pm the same day.

Politicians make decisions concerning grants

In its annual budget, Helsinki City Council determines the amount of money available for street and green area maintenance. The Urban Environment Committee will decide how much of the budgeted funds will be spent on street maintenance.
