About one dozen islands in Helsinki can be reached by commuter ferries during the summer season. The Suomenlinna ferry operates throughout the year and is the only ferry operated by Helsinki Region Transport (HSL) as part of the overall Helsinki Metropolitan Area public transport system.
Other islands are served by several ferry operators, and routes, timetables and fares vary by the operator.
The Suomenlinna ferry operates from the Helsinki Market Square and Katajanokka. Ferry timetables are available from the Helsinki Region Transport (HSL) website and from the HSL phone information at +358 9 4766 4000, Mon-Fri 7.00-19.00, Sat-Sun 9.00-17.00.
The Suomenlinna ferry accepts all HSL tickets. At its cheapest, the cost of the ride is that of a single ticket. Tickets can be purchased from machines at the Market Square and Katajanokka terminals. Apart from machines, single tickets can be purchased from buses, trams and commuter trains. Fares and information on the validity of tickets on various modes of transport are available from the HSL website.
The Suomenlinna ferries carry 1-2 cars depending on the type of ferry. It is recommended that a car space is booked in advance. Bookings are accepted by the ferry operator Suomenlinnan Liikenne by phone at +358 9 3102 1000, from 9.00–12.00 on weekdays. Bookings should be made at least one day ahead.
Suomenlinna is also served by JT-Line, which does not accept HSL tickets. Information on the JT-Line ferry service is available from the JT-Line website and phone information at +358 9 534 806.
