Foster families and homes, emergency services

When a child needs short-term foster care, the child is placed in a foster family, an institutional family home or a foster care institution.

A child can be taken into foster care either by a non-institutional support measure, in which case the foster care is by consent of the parents, or an emergency measure by the decision of a social worker.

The goal of the services is to investigate and evaluate the situation of families and children, as well as to secure care for children and young people in situations where care in their homes is not possible for some reason. During foster care, a plan how to proceed is prepared in cooperation with the family.

In addition to foster care, emergency services for children and youth are extended to their homes.
