Apprenticeship training

In apprenticeship training the vocational studies are conducted at the workplace and supported by theoretical studies. Theoretical studies consist of studies in a vocational institution from 1 to 5 days a month, depending on prior education, degree and working experience.

All the upper secondary level vocational degrees can be obtained by apprentice training, including specialized degree training. Apprenticeship training takes from 1 to 3 years in total. Apprenticeship studies qualify students for further studies at universities.

Apprenticeship training is a fixed-term contract between the employer and the student. During apprenticeship training, the trainee will be paid a salary according to collective labour agreement. The employer will receive training compensation.

Apprenticeship training can also be based on a fixed-term written contract between an official and the employer, namely apprenticeship training for officials. Entrepreneurs can study in apprenticeship training by engaging in apprenticeship training for entrepreneurs. In this case the contract will be concluded between apprenticeship unit in the Helsinki vocational college and the entrepreneur.

Both young people and adults can study in apprenticeship training. Trainees demonstrate their skills through their work performance, and they are evaluated directly by their performance in the workplace.

Apprenticeship training is organized by Helsinki Vocational College.
