Emergency medical care

Emergency medical care is part of the on-duty healthcare services which is responsible for the status evaluation and emergency medical care of a patient, who has a sudden illness or who has had an injury, at the scene of the event, and for the patient’s transport to the on-duty service location of healthcare services, if necessary.

The implementation of the emergency medical service is defined in more depth regionally, based on the local customer needs and risk assessments on the basis of which the decision on the emergency medical care’s service level is made. It defines, for example, the resources of ambulances and other treatment units, such as the number and location of fire engines and the crews’ treatment capabilities and equipment. The duties of the emergency medical service also include the maintenance and development of disaster preparedness and preparing for exceptional conditions.
