The skyscraper hotel Torni, a 70-metre-tall Helsinki landmark, will close at Christmas for renovation. Nearly all hotel rooms, the lobby, the bars and the restaurants will be transformed. The original spirit of Torni will be restored in the renovated and rebuilt hotel building, scheduled to reopen in 2021.
The accommodation services of Solo Sokos Hotel Torni will close on 16 December 2019, and the bars and restaurants Ateljee Bar, American Bar, O’Malley’s and Restaurant Torni will close on 20 December. Accommodation and catering services will operate as normal until these dates.
Modelled after skyscrapers
Hotel Torni was opened on 19 March 1931, accompanied with a debate: not everybody in Helsinki had been impressed with the idea of a new skyscraper in the heart of the city. However, as the floors of the building were erected in a fast succession, many became proud of the tall building by the time it was finished. The bulky classical-style building was designed by the architect duo, brothers Jung & Jung, who modelled the building after American skycrapers of the 1920s.
The hotel renovation project will commence with demolition and re-construction work in January 2020. The project will constitute the most extensive renovation in the hotel since it was opened. In addition to an interior transformation, the hotel will undergo a thorough structural transformation, with hotel room windows and doors, pipes, lighting, and ventilation and air conditioning rebuilt. Only the building exterior, apart from lighting, will remain the same. The business ideas of the hotel, the bars and the restaurants will be redefined.
