Finland’s most popular pop group JVG will entertain people who are spending first of May at home by performing a live gig in virtual reality using elements that are familiar from the gaming industry on May Day eve April 30 at 7 PM. The gig is offered by the City of Helsinki together with virtual reality specialised Zoan and Fullsteam Agency and the arena will be Virtual Helsinki, created from the center of Helsinki.
“Next week we’re going to celebrate the first of May of all times by throwing a party together with you all from home! We are thrilled to be able to party with you all this way; this is the time when the eternal first of May goes through a transformation and becomes a cosy first of May at home. This is a good way to bring some festive feeling into this exceptional spring. We’re making history by celebrating the May Day eve at home, yet all together”, rejoices JVG about their upcoming first of May gig.
“We are facing a very different first of May that we’ll have to spend apart from each other. Even if we can not be physically together we can still enjoy first of May as a community and be together in spirit. The live gig of JVG in Virtual Helsinki is a part of the city’s versatile programme for the celebrations of May Day eve and first of May. With this, we want to make it possible for everyone to have a great time during the celebrations of May Day and to welcome spring. Thanks to the programme taking place in virtual reality we will all be able to spend first of May together apart” emphasises Jan Vapaavuori, Mayor of Helsinki.
The live experience has been built on the Burst Live technology platform that was developed by Zoan. Key component here is the Unreal Engine game engine where the virtual reality, i.e. in this case Helsinki’s Senate Square, takes place. Public can join in with their smart phones or computers. There is no need for VR-goggles.
Everyone who signs in on the gig may create their own avatar and with some luck spot themselves dancing on the virtual square with the others in the crowd. The audience is encouraged to participate with gestures, cheering and emojis that are communicated to the artists in the studio in real time.
“We have been developing this platform for a long time already and the coronavirus situation created a real need for implementing it. What better way to start than enabling the celebrations for May Day in our own home town?” says Miikka Rosendahl, CEO and founder of Zoan.
