Rapid population growth in Helsinki

The permanent population of Helsinki was 653,835 at the turn of the year 2019/2020. The population increased by 5,793 in 2019, which means that the population increase exceeded that of the previous year by 1,000 residents. The population growth was faster only in Espoo.

However, the annual growth was slower than previously during the last decade as the population of Helsinki increased by 7,500 residents on average between 2010 and 2017.

The Finnish-speaking population grew by 1,426 and the Swedish-speaking population by 132 residents. The number of Swedish-speaking residents in Helsinki is now 36,665, or 5.6 per cent. The number of foreign-language speakers increased by 4,234 residents, and they were now 106,059, or 16.2 per cent of the population in total. The increase in the number of foreign-language speakers has been faster elsewhere in the metropolitan area than in Helsinki.

The number of children in early childhood education age decreases, number of school children increases

The number of children in early childhood education age, aged 1–6, decreased by 516 and the number of schoolchildren, aged 7–15, increased by 1,404. The age group for upper secondary education grew by 189 persons. The number of retired people, over 65-year-olds, increased by 2,315 and the number people aged over 75 increased by 1,591 residents.

Metropolitan area grows rapidly, Espoo growing at unprecedented pace

The population of Espoo increased faster than ever before, by 6,099 residents, and the growth in Vantaa was 5,609 residents. The entire metropolitan area grew by 17,683 residents and the region has grown faster only in 1963 and 1965, excluding wartime emergency conditions. The growth in the Helsinki region was 19,492 residents.
