Helsinki’s facility reservation system Varaamo to include saunas, cabins and tennis courts in the summer

The City of Helsinki’s joint facility reservation system Varaamo provides residents with access to more than a hundred public facilities for a fee and free of charge. In the summer of 2020, Varaamo will also feature event facilities, saunas and 18 tennis courts.

The facility reservation system Varaamo is a constantly developing online service through which residents, organisations and various operators can reserve facilities and equipment, from saunas to sewing machines. Varaamo can be used for activities such as using a music studio, playing tennis, sewing and repairing clothes or holding a book club meeting.

People found Varaamo’s new services with ease, as all cabins were reserved within the first hour. However, Varaamo still has sauna and tennis reservations available for the summer, as well as event facilities.

Facilities reserved through Varaamo will be made available in stages, starting on 1 June 2020. Services will open their facilities as their use meets the coronavirus-related safety requirements. We kindly ask you for patience and flexibility in these exceptional circumstances.

New facilities in the Varaamo service from June

Previously, tennis courts were reserved on-site and by queuing. Now, you can avoid queuing by making a reservation digitally through Varaamo in advance. The reservation fee is €7/h. Unused outdoor tennis courts can still be used free of charge on a first-come-first served-basis, provided that there are no players present who have reserved an individual time slot.

Varaamo will also feature more meeting rooms, such as the Tapuli multipurpose room at Tapulikaupunki Library and the multipurpose and group work facilities of Pitäjänmäki Library.

Saunas are available on Kaunissaari and Pihlajasaari. The sauna times and fees vary, so we recommend checking the information in the description of each sauna in Varaamo. Kaunissaari also features cabins that can be reserved for a week.

The wooden platform built on Kauppatori by the Suomenlinna ferry terminal last summer is ideal for enjoying the summer, spending time and holding small music and dance events, for example. This summer, the platform will host city dance events every Thursday starting from 18 June, with social distancing taken into account.
Varaamo also features other interesting outdoor facilities across the city, such as squares, pavilions and park locations.

Varaamo is an extensive development project included in the digitalisation programme of Helsinki’s Culture and Leisure Division. The online payment system and the facility reservation schedule structure are currently under development. The goal is to make Varaamo as easy-to-use as possible, providing all residents with working facilities suited to their needs.
