What is right-of-occupancy housing?

Right-of-occupancy housing is a cross between owner-occupied and rental housing that combines the best attributes of both forms. In the case of a right-of-occupancy dwelling, you pay the so-called right-of-occupancy fee, which is up to 15% of the dwelling’s original value. You will also pay a residence charge, similar to rent.

You can live in a right-of-occupancy dwelling for as long as you like. When you eventually move out of the dwelling, you will be refunded the right-of-occupancy fee you paid, adjusted by the building cost index.
