Greater Helsinki Vision 2050

Greater Helsinki Vision 2050 was an open international design competition for developing the Helsinki region. It was internationally notable in the placing of target, the size of the planning area and prize sum. The first prize was 160.000 euros and all together half a million euros were given in prizes.

The competition recieved 86 accepted entries. The chairman of the jury was assistant city manager Pekka Korpinen. Finnish Association of Architects nominated two professional judges, professors Helka-Liisa Hentilä and Trevor Harris. Foreign member of the jury was professor Peter Ache.

The trends and challenges emerged in the competition entries were climate change, population ageing, awareness about health and enviroment, ethical consumerism, the diversity of lifestyles, the change in work and the rise of work related mobility.

The winning proposition "Emerald" was designed by WSP Finland from Helsinki. The jury described the proposition as "visionary and diverse proposal, which reaches truly to the future" . You can view the proposition here

The second place in the competition was shared by three entries: Towards City 2.0, by Demos Now,  Boundary Strips by Frank Görgen and Holistic Uniqueness by Oliver Seidel and Verena Brehm. (links)
