Art along the Ring Rail Line
The new Ring Rail Line, which opened to traffic on 1 July this year, provides a rail link between Helsinki central railway station, Helsinki-Vantaa Aiport and the rest of the country.
The trains running at short intervals also serve a great number of commuters in the Helsinki metropolitan area. Five new stations have been completed along the line. The total length of the new rail line is 18 kilometres with 8 kilometres running underground.
When the Ring Rail Line was planned, the City of Vantaa – one of the main cities in the metropolitan area – set requirements regarding the use of art along the line. The first environmental art plan in Finland was devised for this purpose, with stations as the primary focus. Works of art now decorate the Airport Station and the stations in the suburbs of Myyrmäki, Kivistö and Leinelä.
Something still remains to be completed. During the first months, access to the terminals at the Airport Station is through the Tietotie entrance. The airport terminals can be reached by a free shuttle bus service or by foot. The direct entrance from the train station to the terminals is due to be opened by the end of December.
