Design in city’s DNA

In 2014 UNESCO named Helsinki a City of Design as a part of the global UNESCO Creative Cities Network. “Design makes people’s voices heard,” point out Laura Aalto and Tiina-Kaisa Laakso-Liukkonen of International Design Foundation and Anu Mänttäri of the Helsinki economic development division.

A feminist from Mogadishu

Somali-born Saido Mohamed learned from her father that daughters are equal to sons. For the past ten years, she has worked in Finland for the rights of foreign-born women and girls. The Somali civil war broke up Saido Mohamed’s family. She ended up in Hämeenlinna, where her sister was living. It was 1991, and she was 16 at the time.

Art along the new Ring Rail Line

The first environmental art plan in Finland was devised for the Ring Rail Line, with stations as the primary focus. The Ring Rail Line provides a rail link between Helsinki city center, Helsinki-Vantaa Aiport and the rest of the country.
