Helsinki City Transport made important tram purchases in
1954. Four-axle trams came into service. They operated on line 4 between Hietalahti and
Munkkiniemi, where the newest units were traditionally placed. The new trams held more
passengers, with seats for 29 and standing room for an additional 70. A closed cab was
provided for the driver.
Operators have always been interested in the number of passengers using services. This
combined ticket stamping machine and passenger counter was tried on a tram in the 1950s.
In 1956 an adult single ticket cost 25 marks, an 11-trip ticket 200 marks and a 30-trip
ticket 500 marks.
When Erik von Frenckell boarded a tram, he did not buy a ticket but showed the conductor
his necklace. Erik von Frenckell was in charge of public transport in Helsinki for a
quarter of a century. He chaired the Helsinki Tram and Omnibus Company from 1935 to 1945
and Helsinki City Transport from 1945 to 1960.
