In the 1970s public opinion again turned in favour of trams. Nowadays everyone takes trams for granted, from the man in the street to decision-makers.

"On the basis of research conducted by Helsinki City Transport, tram services in Helsinki will continue and will be further developed. This is supported by economic and environmental factors as well as trams’ popularity among passengers. Consequently measures were taken to procure new articulated trams."

In the 1970s separate lanes were reserved for trams and traffic moved more smoothly. Traffic on Hämeentie in 1971.

Passengers were quite pleased with changes. The following comments were printed in Helsingin Sanomat on 8 September 1974:

"When traffic in Helsinki was really jammed, when there were no tram or bus lanes and vehicles were old, motorists said that they would leave their cars at home if public transport could be made to work properly. Now that something has been done, what do we see: the same faces behind the wheel, al-though public transport now flows smoothly in separate lanes..."
