The construction site will be a low-emission site, and the project will use an electric excavator. The project will also include artwork printed on the panels of the railing of the Kipparlahti bridge and retaining wall.
The contractor is Tieluiska Oy.
The new section of the Eastern Baana route runs mainly along the metro line
The project includes the construction of one-way bike paths on the eastern part of Kulosaaren puistotie between Tupasaarentie and Kipparlahdensilmukka and a new roundabout at Kipparlahdensilmukka.
From the roundabout, the Eastern Baana will continue towards Herttoniemi as a two-way bike path, which will be built next to the metro. A pedestrian walkway will be built next to the bike path, separated by a cobblestone strip.
The project involves building a new bridge for pedestrians and cyclists that will allow the Baana to cross Kipparlahdensilmukka, next to the metro line. After the bridge, the Eastern Baana will continue towards Herttoniemi in the park area alongside the metro line.
New car parking areas will be built on the east side of the roundabout and under the new bridge in Kipparlahdensilmukka. The areas will serve visitors to the Kivinokka and Vanhankaupunginselkä recreation areas.
Hiihtäjänkuja will be transformed into a bicycle-friendly local road, where the Baana route will be marked with red asphalt.
Construction affects the ski trail from Kivinokka
Due to construction work, the section of the Kivinokka–Viikki ski trail between Kipparlahdensilmukka and Hiihtäjäntie will be decommissioned at the beginning of February. The area is needed for the construction site. In the future, the ski trail towards Viikki will be accessible from Hiihtäjäntie.
The project will plant new trees and a large number of seedlings
Due to the construction work, many trees need to be cut down next to the metro line. These trees will be felled before the bird nesting season.
Around 30 new trees will be planted. In addition, around 170 new reforestation saplings will be planted in the Saunalahti/Fastholma ridge forest and just over 1000 in the Kipparlahdensilmukka green conservation area.
The Eastern Baana being completed one section at a time
The Eastern Baana between eastern Helsinki and the city centre will be built in stages. The Kulosaaren puistotie section was completed in 2021, where the Baana is a bicycle street. The Oravapuisto park section of the Eastern Baana between Suunnittelijankatu and Valurinkatu was completed at the end of 2023.
A general plan for the section from Valurinkatu to Itäpolku was completed in December of 2023. Next, this section will move on to street planning. The route location selected for planning runs alongside Itäväylä.
