Extensive roadworks begin in Hakaniemi, no tram service to the area in March

A roadworks project that will last eight months has begun in Hakaniemi, part of the construction of the new Kruunusillat tramway. The work will have a major impact on the city's tram services and also affect other traffic. From 3 to 30 March, no trams will run between Hakaniemi and the city centre. Residents are encouraged to use the Metro or a bus to access the area.

You can find information about the affected bus routes below. The route changes will generally not affect bus timetables. To see the new routes in the Journey Planner, use a search date of 3 March or later when searching for a route or timetable.

There will be changes to traffic arrangements in Hakaniemi already on Sunday 2 March at 6pm. At the same time, there will also be changes to bus stop locations. Traffic controllers will be on site who can help passengers find the correct stops, if needed.

Bus routes that terminate in Hakaniemi

Bus routes 614, 617, 623, 633, 643(K), 711(K), 721 and 731 terminate in Hakaniemi. These buses currently depart from Hakaniemen torikatu next to Hakaniemi Market Square.

Starting 3 March, the buses will depart from the “Merihaka” (H2513) bus stop on Sörnäisten rantatie. From there, they will continue via Miina Sillanpään katu to Hämeentie and Sörnäinen. There will be another temporary bus stop, “Näkinkuja” (H2509), on Miina Sillanpään katu, approximately 200 meters from Hakaniemi Market Square.

When arriving in Hakaniemi, the terminus of the buses will be “Väino Tannerin kenttä (H2512) on Haapaniemenkatu. The stop is about a 500-meter walk from Hakaniemi Market Square. If you want to avoid walking, get off the bus in Sörnäinen and change to the Metro or to a bus heading to the Railway Square (Rautatientori). The buses will not continue from Haapaniemenkatu to the “Merihaka” and “Näkinkuja” stops because the stop on Haapaniemenkatu will be a timing point.

The route is changed because the buses cannot follow their usual route from Siltasaarenkatu to Hakaniemen torikatu due to the construction work. Additionally, buses which depart from the Railway Square will serve the stops on Hakaniemen torikatu and there is not enough space for buses departing from Hakaniemi to use the same stops.

Buses departing from the Railway Square

Buses 71, 73N, 74N, 75, 77(N), 78(N), 79N, 717(K, N), 718(A), 721N, 731N, 739, 785(K), 787(A, K) and 788(K) run from the Railway Square towards Lahdenväylä and buses 61(N), 64, 65, 66, 67(N), 600, 611, 633N, 643N and 665N run towards Tuusulanväylä. These buses currently travel along Siltasaarenkatu to the west of Hakaniemi Market Square.

Starting 3 March, the buses will run along Hakaniemen torikatu to the east of the market square. There will be two stops on Hakaniemen torikatu: buses towards Lahdenväylä will serve bay 25 and buses towards Tuusulanväylä will serve bay 24.

In the direction of the Railway Square, the buses will stop on the west side of the market square (bay 15). Due to changes in traffic arrangements, the buses will use the current northbound lane on Siltasaarenkatu. The new stop is next to the tram stop closest to Hakaniemi Market Square.

Bus 23 will also serve the same stops at the market square (bay 24 towards Pirkkola, bay 15 towards the Railway Square). Read more about the new route of bus 23 in Kallio in our service update.
