Juhana Vartiainen awarded Finnish honorary title ’ylipormestari’

Helsinki Mayor Juhana Vartiainen has received the honorary title ylipormestari (a title that corresponds approximately with Lord Mayor in certain other countries). The title was granted by the President of the Republic Alexander Stubb in the Presidential sessions of the Government 22 November 2024.

Finnish citizens can be awarded honorary titles in public recognition of their services to society. Vartiainen has been the Mayor of Helsinki since 2021.  

Before his mayoral term, Vartiainen was a Member of Parliament from 2015 to 2021. Earlier in his career he was Director General of the VATT Institute for Economic Research in 2012–2015; in Stockholm he was the Head of Research Division at the Swedish National Institute of Economic Research (Konjunkturinstitutet) in 2005–2012 and director of the Trade Union Institute for Economic Research (Stiftelsen fackföreningsrörelsens institut för ekonomisk forskning) in 2003–2005. He has also been senior researcher in 2002–2003 and worked with several economic research positions between 1983–2002.

Juhana Vartiainen is Doctor of Political Sciences from the University of Helsinki.
