New signage to be installed in Central Park

The implementation of the much-anticipated new signage in Helsinki Central Park will begin in the northern part of the area in the spring. Preparatory work will be carried out before the installation of the signs. This includes the construction of new ski trails in accordance with the signage plan. Due to the new ski trails and installation of the signs, some trees need to be felled and vegetation cleared to improve visibility.

A new signage system will be installed in Central Park, involving minor changes to the outdoor trails. The trails on Kuninkaantammentie and to the west of the Paloheinä hut, which currently serve as ski trails in the winter, will be converted into year-round walking and cycling trails. Next to these, new ski trails about 600 metres long will be built.

The new ski trails are tracks for classic skiing, so they do not require much space and their impact on the forest landscape and nature is as small as possible. The ski trails have been routed such that tall trees and trees in good condition can be preserved.

Some trees will be felled in March to make space for the ski trails, and the trunks are left to decay in the forest to increase biodiversity. During the planning, it was ensured that the felling of the trees would cause no harm to flying squirrels.

Installation of signs on outdoor trails to begin in spring

The installation of signs and guide maps in accordance with the Central Park signage plan will begin in the spring. Due to the installation of the signs, individual trees will be felled in March and, if necessary, brushwood that hinders the visibility of signs will be removed.

There is a great need for new signage, because the network of trails in Central Park is extensive and the current signage is inadequate. The new signage clearly distinguishes between walking and cycling routes ploughed in the winter and ski trails.

The Urban Environment Committee approved the general signage plan for Central Park in 2020 and the park plans for the new ski trails in 2022.
