Population growth in Helsinki continued last year

According to preliminary data, strong population growth in Helsinki continued last year. The most significant factor in the growth was Helsinki's migration gain. Migration gain from Finland was greater than last year, while foreign migration gain decreased. The most significant growth was seen in Kalasatama and Pohjois-Pasila.

According to preliminary data published by Statistics Finland, the population of Helsinki grew by more than 10,000 people in 2024, continuing the trend from the previous year. The city's historically high growth is driven by migration.

Foreign migration gain in Helsinki amounted to 6,100 people, which is lower than in the previous year, but still clearly higher than the average of the 2010s. Domestic migration contributed more to Helsinki compared to the previous year. Domestic migration happens in both directions, as Helsinki receives migration gain from elsewhere in Finland while losing residents to other areas in the Helsinki Region.

Number of births remains low, population growth focused on people of working age

The number of births in Helsinki remained low, similarly to the past two years. The number of deaths decreased slightly in 2024 compared to the previous year, but has been on an upward trend throughout the 2000s due to the ageing of the population.

Of the age groups, 30–49-year-olds was the group that grew the most. There was also a significant increase in the oldest age group, 75 years and older.

According to preliminary data, the population grew in almost all areas of Helsinki. The number of residents grew most in the new housing production projects of Kalasatama and Pohjois-Pasila.

Statistics Finland will publish last year's official population statistics in spring 2025.
