At the turn of October and November (19 October–8 November 2020), Espoo,
Helsinki, Kauniainen and Vantaa carried out a joint customer survey aimed at
all the guardians of children in municipal and private early childhood
education and pre-primary education.
The customer survey was sent out to nearly 60,000 guardians of children
who are in either municipal or private early childhood education. The total
number of responses received was 15,269.
The aim of the survey was to examine children’s and their guardians’
experiences of early childhood education and pre-primary education and their
wishes concerning development areas.
The previous survey carried out in 2017 was updated in cooperation with
the municipalities of the Helsinki region, guardians and employees. As part of
the update, the survey was made more concise and supplemented with questions
aimed at children.
The survey could be submitted in Finnish, Swedish, English, Estonian,
Russian, Arabic and Somali. The technical implementation of the survey was carried
out by Innolink Research Oy.
Children enjoy early childhood education and pre-primary education
Children’s enjoyment and the staff in early childhood education and
pre-primary education received the highest ratings in the survey. Children and
guardians also felt that children have good and sufficient numbers of friendships
in early childhood education and pre-primary education.
Based on the responses, the municipalities have room for improvement in
children’s opportunities to participate in the planning of activities and the
processing of feedback, ideas and wishes received from parents. Based on the
results of the survey, there is also room for improvement in the utilisation of
more versatile learning environments in early childhood education and
pre-primary education.
The shared results of the customer survey were published at an event
streamed from Helsinki City Hall on 13 January 2021. A summary of the results
is available on the websites of the participating municipalities. Early
childhood education units will also be going through the results with
guardians. The results of the survey will be utilised in the development of
early childhood education and pre-primary education activities.
