The building at Yrjönkatu 18 is one of the most valuable historical buildings in the centre of Helsinki. The building is currently owned by Svenska folkskolans vänner (SFV). Renovation is planned for the property, in connection with which the property will be adapted for new use. The aim is to diversify the use of the building and create more living urban space in the city centre.

The building will be extended to the courtyard

A centre for cooperation and learning open to all will be implemented in the building. Old classrooms, halls and lobbies will be converted for gathering, working, hobby and exhibition use. The building technology, lighting and furnishings will also be modernised.

In the renovation, the building will be extended to the courtyard. The new auditorium to be located in the extension is suitable for various events and gatherings.

“We want to make the valuable building a meeting venue for modern and open learning and cooperation. The question is both about fostering and modernising – not just about preserving the building, but also giving it a living future,” says Johan Aura, Managing Director of SFV.

Public functions, such as exhibition and workshop spaces and a café, will be located in the lower floors of the building. There will be office spaces and shared workspaces in the upper floors. The old assembly hall will be transformed into the building’s living room, which will bring together the users of the building. The goal is for the new building to open to the public in 2027.

The plan will be presented in the G18 assembly hall on 10 February

The project will be presented and discussed on Monday, 10 February 2025 at 6 pm - 8 pm. The event will provide information on the upcoming renovation and the kinds of activities that the building will offer after the renovation. There will be time for discussion and questions after the presentation. Small snacks will also be available to the participants.

The project materials are available on the hel.fi/suunnitelmat website from 10 February to 7 March 2025. The material consists of a participation and assessment plan, a reference plan and a building history survey. A written opinion on the plans can be submitted to the City of Helsinki Registry until 7 March 2025.
