The Russian invasion of Ukraine has now lasted more than seven months. Concern about Ukraine and the Ukrainian people is present every day. The City of Helsinki has demonstrated its compassion and support through donations worth €350,000 to humanitarian aid and €250,000 to Helsinki-based organisations helping Ukrainian people, and also by providing services, support and guidance to people seeking refuge from the war.
The City is also continuing its symbolic shows of support, such as flying the Ukrainian flag. On 24 August, the national day of Ukraine, the City opened a greeting book, ‘We Stand with Ukraine’, to the public in Central Library Oodi, giving the residents a month to write down their messages for the Ukrainian people. Schoolchildren in Helsinki also drew Ukraine-themed pictures.
Today, the Mayor Juhana Vartiainen presented the greeting book and the drawings to Olga Dibrova, the Ambassador of Ukraine to Finland. The presentation event also featured the 3D ‘Rauhan kyyhkyt (Doves of peace)’ poster made by Ruoholahti Primary School’s class 5B last spring, symbolising the children’s hopes for peace. Every pupil in the class took part in creating the poster. At the same time, the children started to think that the work could send a positive message to Ukrainian children starting in the school, and the poster was placed in a visible spot in the school hallway.
The Mayor believes that the compassion present in the greetings left by the residents and the symbolism of the children’s drawing are significant.
“We cannot forget Ukraine or the Ukrainian people. Russia’s brutal invasion of Ukraine has now lasted for more than 200 days, and as President Zelensky highlighted in our meeting in Kyiv, the country’s reconstruction must be started now. Helsinki is working closely together with other European cities to facilitate this reconstruction, and we also want to show our solidarity and compassion. It was a great joy and honour to present these greetings full of warmth and light to Ambassador Dibrova,” Vartiainen says.
A video collage of the children’s Ukraine-themed drawings will be put together for the media screen in the City Hall’s lobby, and the collage will be shown on the screen when there are no other events held in the premises. The starting date will be released to the public over the first week of October.

Мер Гельсінкі передав привітальну книгу з малюнками послу України
Загарбницька війна Росії проти України триває вже понад сім місяців. Турбота про Україну та її народ присутня щодня. Окрім 350 000 євро гуманітарної допомоги та 250 000 євро на підтримку організацій, які допомагають українцям у Гельсінкі, місто Гельсінкі виявило своє співчуття та підтримку також надаючи послуги, підтримку та поради тим, хто втік від війни в Україні.
У місті також продовжуються символічні жести підтримки, наприклад, вивішування українських прапорів. У День Незалежності України, 24 серпня, у центральній бібліотеці Oodi було представлено адресовану українському народу привітальну книгу «We Stand With Ukraine – Ми підтримуємо Україну», у якій мешканці міста протягом місяця могли залишити своє послання. Крім того, у школах Гельсінкі діти малювали малюнки на тему України.
Сьогодні мер Гельсінкі Югана Вартіайнен передав привітальну книгу з малюнками послу України у Фінляндії Ользі Діброві. На зустрічі також було представлено 3D-плакат на тему України під назвою «Голуби миру», виготовлений учнями 5-Б класу початкової школи Руоголагті минулої весни як символ прагнення дітей до настання миру. До виготовлення плаката долучився кожен учень класу. У того ж класу виникла ідея, що плакат може нести позитивне послання українським учням, які почали навчатися в школі, тому його було розміщено на видному місці в коридорі школи.
Мер Гельсінкі вважає висловлене в побажаннях співчуття мешканців міста та символіку дитячих малюнків важливими.
«Ми не можемо забувати про Україну й українців. Варварська загарбницька війна Росії проти України триває вже понад 200 днів і, як наголовив президент Зеленський під час нашої зустрічі в Києві, відбудовувати країну потрібно вже зараз. Гельсінкі тісно співпрацює з іншими містами Європи для уможливлення відбудови, чим ми хочемо продемонструвати наші солідарність і співчуття. Для мене було радістю і честю передати ці сповнені тепла і світла побажання послу України Діброві», – коментує Вартіайнен.
Із дитячих малюнків на тему України буде зроблено відеоколаж, який демонструватиметься в медіазоні холу мерії в жовтні, коли там не проводитимуть інших подій. Про дату початку демонстрації буде повідомлено протягом першого тижня жовтня.
