Work on Mechelininkatu has started – exceptional traffic arrangements will continue until September

The widening of one-way bicycle paths and pavements on Mechelininkatu started on 4 June. The work affects traffic, and the contractor will inform road users about the changes with signs. The exceptional traffic arrangements will affect car traffic until mid-September. Walking and cycling may be affected for a longer time.

The pavement and one driving lane are out of use at the southern end of Mechelininkatu, from the intersection of Lapinlahdenkatu and Pohjoinen rautatiekatu to the intersection of Itämerenkatu. There are two lanes in both directions available for car traffic. During the interruption in the use of the tram line 8, the tramway section is also used as a driving lane.

On the above-mentioned road section, pedestrians and cycling are also directed to the west side of Mechelininkatu and to Baana.

Personnel will guide night traffic

The storm water pipeline across Mechelininkatu is being replaced. The work will be done at night in order to minimise the inconvenience to traffic. At night, car traffic will be controlled by personnel and signs. The work will not significantly affect walking or cycling, as the construction site is located on the roadway. Traffic will return to current arrangements by 7:00 in the morning.

The work will begin with the dismantling of overhead lines, rails and lamps. During weeks 24–26, there will be water supply work. The excavation and loading work will cause some noise nuisance.

New traffic arrangements make it easier to move in the area

The Mechelininkatu work is expected to continue until mid-September. Tram line 8 will return to its normal route at the beginning of September.

During the work, one-way bicycle paths will be built on Mechelininkatu, south of Lapinlahdenkatu. In addition, the narrow pavement will be widened between Länsilinkki and Mechelininaukio. In intersection areas, crossings for pedestrians and cyclists will be updated.

In connection with the construction of the streets, some municipal infrastructure, such as water supply infrastructure and telecommunications links, will be replaced, and a new network will be built to serve, for example, the hub for growth companies that will later be constructed in the area around the former Maria Hospital.
