The construction of the skateboarding venue will begin on 8 August. The work consists mainly of concrete construction: formwork, reinforcement and placing of concrete. A new concrete skateboarding venue will be built in the old wading pool. Skateboarding elements and structures will be added to the venue. One of the elements is a skateboardable Cinderella shoe. Compared to other skateboarding venues in Helsinki, the venue to be built is quite small.
The skateboarding venue will be completed in the autumn of 2024. During the construction, pedestrians and cyclists will be able to use the promenade that passes through the park. There will be no work phases that cause noise, dust or other disturbances.
Playground renovations almost done
At the same time, Tuhkimo Park is undergoing playground renovation work, which started in the autumn of 2023. In the renovation, play equipment that is in poor repair will be removed from the playground. New swings, a climbing net, two ground trampolines, a large sandbox, a ping-pong table and a low stage will replace the old equipment. The playground will receive new benches and table groups, as well as wooden counters for sitting. New trees and shrubs will be planted in the area. The lighting in the area will also be renewed. The playground will be opened for use in August, but the playing and exercising area can only be finished once the skateboarding venue has been built. The entire park will be completed in October 2024.
The proposal to renovate the playground came from the residents of the area in participatory budgeting, otherwise known as the OmaStadi vote. The proposal received 1,477 votes, the highest number in the whole Southeastern Major District. In the same proposal, the residents expressed a desire to build a new skateboarding venue. The playground and the skateboarding venue of Tuhkimo Park have been planned together with the residents. Preliminary drafts were presented in the summer of 2022, and plans were modified based on feedback from residents. Two workshops were also held with the skaters, during which the future skateboarding venue was outlined.
VRJ Etelä-Suomi Oy is the contractor for the construction of the skateboarding venue.
