The new street will be called Sahamyllynrinne. Sahamyllynrinne as well as Hernepellontie, which is being renovated at the same time, are located in Viikinranta. The street construction is linked to the construction of the Energy Quarter at Viikinranta, which will be receiving its own transport connection.
After the completion of the works, the vehicle traffic to the Energy Quarter will be directed to Sahamyllynrinne, which will reduce the vehicle traffic passing through the adjacent residential area. Currently, vehicle traffic passes through Pornaistenkuja and Sahamyllyntie.
Work starts with rock excavation at the beginning of 2025
The new street will be built in a rocky area, which will require significant excavation work. The excavation works will start on week 3 in January and are planned to be completed at the end of 2025.
Drilling and blasting will cause a disturbance in the area. Noisy work will be carried out on weekdays from 7 am to 6 pm. The work will cause intermittent traffic stops and temporary traffic arrangements on the Lahti Motorway and Hernepellontie.
Cabling work in autumn 2025
The work will continue in the autumn of 2025 with the construction of Fingrid's 400 kilovolt cable network link. When completed, the cable link will pass from the Viikinranta Energy Block to Länsisalmi substation in Vantaa. The entire cable link is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2026.
The new cable link is a response to the growing electricity consumption in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area. It is a joint project of the City of Helsinki, Helen Electricity Network and Fingrid that promotes the green transition.
Streets will be built in 2026
In 2026, the street structures and municipal engineering of the Sahamyllynrinne will be constructed, along with the alteration of the Hernepellontie intersection. A pavement on the northern side of the street will be built and new lampposts installed.
A turning point will be built next to the Energy Block at the intersection of Sahamyllyntie and Sahamyllynrinne.
Intersection changes will be implemented at Hernepellontie by widening the street for the link to Sahamyllynrinne.
As a whole, the construction in the area is planned to be completed in 2026. The general contractor for the excavation is GRK Suomi Oy. Street construction works will be tendered later.
