The City of Helsinki will begin building a new main cycling route on the section between Maaherrantie street and Kestipuisto park in September.

The work will start in the week beginning on 11 September and will be completed by the end of May 2024 at the latest.

During the contract, a 270-metre long section of the new main cycling route Northern Baana will be built alongside the railroad track, replacing the old railway maintenance road. The new two-way cycle path is four meters wide, and next to it runs a 2.5-metre-wide pedestrian path. The contract also includes the construction of a new retaining wall on the track side of the path and the construction of new outdoor lighting.

Due to construction work, three trees have to be cut down from the edge of Kestipuisto park. To replace these, five new trees will be planted in Kestipuisto park.

Work is primarily carried out on weekdays between 6 am and 8 pm. The work may cause some noise and dust emissions. There will be a lot of construction site traffic due to the earth moving that will be carried out on the site.

The contractor is GRK.

Building the Baana network is progressing

Northern Baana is being built in parts. Once completed, the Northern Baana will run along the eastern side of the railroad track between the borders of Käpylä and Vantaa, connecting Oulunkylä, Pukinmäki, Malmi, Tapanila and Puistola. So far, the section between Hakamäentie and Käpylä has been completed.

The planning of the Norther Baana is still in progress, and the construction is expected to continue in 2025. The street plan for the part that is now under construction was approved in connection with the planning of Jokeri Light Rail.

Helsinki plans to build a network of high-quality cycle paths throughout the city, connecting large residential areas to the city centre and hubs of employment. The Baanas enable fast, direct and steady-speed cycling.
