A restricted parking area introduced in central Helsinki in spring 2023
In spring 2023, a parking reform was introduced in the city centre of Helsinki and southern parts of the inner city. In the reform, the parking of shared e-scooters was restricted to marked parking spaces only.
A total of 250 parking spaces were placed on squares, markets and kerbsides, about 130 of which were in car parking spaces. The restricted parking area covers the region south of Hesperia Esplanade and Pitkäsilta Bridge. The western border is at Lauttasaari Bridge. The City is planning to use the restricted parking area also in 2024.
Fewer e-scooters in Helsinki in 2023
In the central Helsinki restricted parking area, the number of e-scooters dropped to about 3,600 per day from 9,000 per day in the previous year, when the numbers of e-scooters were at their highest.
In Helsinki as a whole, the number of e-scooters dropped from a record 18,000 (2022) to 12,000 e-scooters (2023) on average.
Parking Control began to apply a separate fee for the local removals of e-scooters. In the spring and summer, they removed hundreds of incorrectly parked e-scooters locally. Local removal costs the operator 55 euros, while removal to a storage facility costs 60 euros.
Based on an observation study carried out by the City in the summer, 94% of e-scooters were parked in the dedicated parking spaces or in their immediate vicinity. The observation also shows that there are fewer incidents resulting from parking.
