Helsinki seeks input for reinvigorating the city centre

Helsinki has launched two projects to support the development of its city centre. In the first, experts from outside the city organisation will be asked to come up with a proposal for revitalising the core of the Helsinki downtown area, and in the second, a joint declaration of intent for the development of the city centre will be drawn up in collaboration with representatives from the business sector.

“We have started an analysis that will map out the factors that contribute to the city centre’s vitality. When complete, it will offer a vision on possible measures for the development of the core area that is founded in strong external expertise. The goal is to reinvigorate Helsinki’s city centre,” said Ilppo Soininvaara, Senior Specialist for Helsinki's Urban Environment Division.

Factors that contribute to the vitality of the downtown area will also be accompanied by data collection aimed at Helsinki residents.

“We have opened up a survey that targets the city’s residents, and we encourage everyone in Helsinki to actively participate. The survey will produce valuable information that we can use in the analysis,” Soininvaara said.

Another ongoing work related to the development of the city centre is the joint declaration of intent for the city centre development that will be drawn up in cooperation between the City of Helsinki and the Helsinki business community.

“The goal of the first phase is to form a common situational assessment of the city centre. After this, our work will continue in workshops. The results of the workshops will be compiled into a shared vision of the success factors behind a flourishing city centre. In January 2025, we should have our final result: an analysis of the necessary measures in the future and the roles of different actors in their implementation," said Timo Hämäläinen, Senior Specialist for the City of Helsinki's Economic Development Department.
