A change in the local detailed plan is being prepared for the plot next to the former Uusimaa Barracks at Maurinkatu 1b and 3a in Kruununhaka. New residential construction is planned for the area for around 100 inhabitants along Maurinkatu and in the courtyard of the block. Preliminary plans for the old barracks buildings include day-care facilities.
The current use of the historically valuable buildings on the block has come to an end, and the State is giving up ownership of the plot. The aim of the plan is to enable infill construction in the block by making the existing urban structure more dense, taking into account the specific characteristics of the area. The plan will create more housing in the area, secure jobs in an easily accessible area and make the city centre’s street areas more lively. The aim is also to renovate the existing valuable courtyard.
New construction will be located in the northern part of the block’s large courtyard. This will keep the courtyard area between the buildings in the southern part of the courtyard open, highlighting the handsome brick military architecture and the overall environment.
The participation and assessment plan for the change in the local detailed plan and the accompanying materials were available for comments in spring 2020, after which the planning work has been continued and refined. The plan has sought to take into account feedback from the previous phase by modifying the underground parking arrangements, for example. The new building along the street has also been lowered by one floor and the massing and lighting angles of the courtyard building have been revised in relation to the neighbouring buildings.
