One of the plots will be reserved for A-Kruunu Oy, which builds affordable rental housing, and its proposal “Laskos” (A fold). The main idea of the proposal is to improve the quality of housing when building new blocks of flats. Each landing has a moderate number of apartments, which makes it possible to have the entry in the middle of the apartment, windows at both ends of the apartment and bright views in more than one direction. As a rule, the kitchen has its own space, and it is possible to furnish the rooms for different purposes.
The other plot will be reserved for the construction company Marvea Oy and its proposal “Vario – Kerrostaloasumisen uusi joustavampi aikakausi Vario” (Vario – A new, more flexible era of apartment housing). The idea behind Marvea’s proposal is the adaptability of apartments without technical or structural changes. In practice, the adaptability is visible in the dining area of apartments. It is possible to furnish the apartments by placing the dining table elsewhere in the apartment and using the dining area for a variety of other purposes.
This year’s Re-thinking Urban Housing plot draw was organised for the first time with a theme set in advance, which was “A well-functioning and sustainable home in the city”. The Re-thinking Urban Housing draw encouraged builders to create non-mainstream, comfortable and well-functioning homes that would stand time.
Through cooperation, the Re-thinking Urban Housing programme aims to increase the quality and attractiveness of living in blocks of flats, and to find new individual solutions. The programme was established in 2009 and has so far included more than forty projects.
The Malminkenttä area will be built into a new urban residential area. The plots are centrally located along the planned light rail line and busy streets. The objective of the Re-thinking Urban Housing plot draw was to find attractive and high-quality housing solutions for a variety of households.
