As the population increases in Jätkäsaari, the need for school and daycare centres will also increase. The new school and daycare centre to be built in Samoankuja will have room for 550 primary and lower secondary grade pupils and 250 early childhood education aged children.

The number of pupils in the current Jätkäsaari comprehensive school and Ruoholahti primary school area is estimated to be at its highest in 2031, with a total of 660 comprehensive school pupils and 140 early childhood education aged children in the area. Because of this, the new building's facilities are designed to be flexible. For example, rooms can later be rearranged according to changing needs. In addition, some of the common areas of the building can be reserved and used by residents and other people in the evenings and weekends.

The project will be implemented as a life cycle model

The building will be owned by the city. The implementation mode will be the life cycle model, in which the city is responsible for the financing of construction, and the service provider, i.e. the contractor, is responsible for the design, construction and 20-year maintenance services of the site.

The Helsinki City Council approved the project plan for the new comprehensive school and daycare centre at its meeting on 28 August. According to the project's preliminary schedule, construction will begin in January 2025. The project is planned to be completed so that activities in the facilities can begin in August 2027.

In the tendering process, YIT was selected as the contractor for the construction project.
