Improvement in Helsinki’s overall payroll situation

The overall payroll situation of the City of Helsinki has continued to improve. In June, the number of new payroll errors remained below 3% and the share of actual salary errors was 2.2%, which is lower than when the previous payroll system was in place.

During June, the number of uncorrected errors, i.e. the correction backlog, decreased by a total of 9% across all types of errors. In June, the tackling of the correction backlog was slowed down by the concentration of payroll resources on checking the across-the-board increases, salary arrangements and one-off payments due. Their payment went well as a whole.

However, the number of contacts to the payroll customer service regarding errors increased as expected in June because city staff had questions about the increases. The situation is expected to return to normal after the summer.

Some city employees received several tax decisions

Some current city employees or persons who worked for the city in early 2022 have received several tax decisions for 2022 from the Tax Administration. The extra tax decisions have been caused by the abnormal frequency of Incomes Register corrections.

Several tax decisions may also have been issued to those whose salaries have been paid correctly. If your tax decision contains incorrect information, the correct information will be automatically restored and a new tax decision will be issued to you, thereby replacing the previous decision.

However, if you receive a new tax decision, the tax refund date may be pushed back and the amount payable may change. This is standard practice under the law and applies to all taxpayers.

The City of Helsinki and the Tax Administration are working together to ensure that the city staff’s data in the Incomes Register will be correct and taxation will be based on correct data by the tax closing date on 31 October.
