The net domestic migration rate to Helsinki was positive by 2,000 people during January-July. The number was approximately 600 people higher than in January-July 2023 but at the same level as it was in mid-2010s. The number of people moving to Helsinki increased and, on the other hand, the number people moving elsewhere in Finland from Helsinki decreased a little in comparison to the previous year.
Migration from abroad decreased somewhat
Migration from abroad is still substantial but a little diminished in comparison to the two years previous. In January-June, Helsinki's net migration rate was positive by approximately 3,000 people when the number was a groundbreaking 4,600 people during the corresponding period in the last four years. The change to the previous year is the result of the decreased number of immigrants.
Both domestic and foreign migration include Finnish and foreign nationals. The preliminary statistics do not include further information about the structure of the migrants.
Natural population growth increased compared to last year
Natural population growth, or the difference between the number of people who were born and the number of people who died, was higher that the previous year: 590 people. A little over 3,690 children were born in Helsinki by the end of July, while the number last year was more than a hundred children fewer. However, the number was still significantly lower than the number for the years 2020 and 2021.
At the end of July, the population of Helsinki numbered approximately 680,000 people.
