The facilities of the Maunula Lower Comprehensive School’s old buildings, which were completed in the 1950s, will be renovated and their versatility will be improved. The technical building systems will be renewed, energy efficiency and accessibility will be improved, and damaged structures and façades will be repaired. The school’s yard areas and their equipment will be renewed. Elevators servicing all floors will be added to the old school structures.

The school will be expanded by building a new section to the upper yard, which will combine all the existing school structures and create a joint facility for all users. The first floor of the expansion will have kitchen and dining/event facilities, a stage/sports facility and music tuition facilities. The second floor will have an entry lobby and student welfare and administration facilities. To enable the expansion, the low intermediate section connecting the buildings, which is in poor condition, will be demolished.

The project plan includes a more detailed description of the contents of the construction project. The Urban Environment Committee’s Buildings and Public Areas Sub-committee is expected to process the project plan on 3 September 2024. The plan will also require approval from the City Board and City Council.

The project plan will be published on the City of Helsinki’s website (www.hel.fi) before the Buildings an Public Areas Sub-committee and on the sub-committee’s website(Link leads to external service).

The construction work is currently estimated to begin in autumn 2025, in which case the renovation will be completed by the end of 2027. The schedule will be specified when an implementer has been selected for the project.

Activities will be held in temporary facilities for the duration of the renovation

The activities of the Maunula Lower Comprehensive School will be held in educational facilities located in Paloheinäntie 40b and Mäkelänkatu 84 for the duration of the renovation. Finnish-speaking pre-primary education aged children will be placed in the daycare centres in the Maunula area.

The activities of the Månsas Primary School have already been transferred to the facilities in Paloheinäntie 40b. The Preschool Månsas förskola’s activities will be transferred to the same facilities when the renovation begins.
