Helsinki libraries offer help with the choice of gift books and lend out surprise packages

Libraries around Helsinki organise a good mood Christmas campaign on 11–23 December. The staff of the libraries have wrapped books which they recommend as gifts with a suitable cover note. In addition, Oodi and the Kallio library will have Christmas-themed pop-up points on a few weekday evenings, where the staff offer tips for gift books in person.

The gift-wrapped books contain many kinds of books for readers of all ages, from classics to the latest new books, and from novels to non-fiction. You can choose the suitable gift for yourself or your loved one based on the cover note attached onto the package, describing the content and topic of the book. However, the name of the book remains a surprise.

The popularity of gift-wrapped books has been tested in previous years in libraries in the eastern area of Helsinki. This year, a total of 18 libraries around Helsinki participate in the campaign.

‘Library visitors have liked this annual campaign a lot, and books from the gift tables have been actively borrowed for the borrowers themselves, as well as for others. Returning the book must obviously be agreed on with the recipient of the gift,’ says information specialist at the Herttoniemi, Laajasalo, and Roihuvuori libraries, Johanna Juvonen.

Tips for Christmas presents from professionals in reading

Year after year, books remain popular Christmas presents. During the most popular Christmas season, Central Library Oodi and the Kallio library feature separate pop-up points where the library staff provides help with choosing the book suitable for the recipient’s personality.

‘We give recommendations for Christmas presents, but also for other holiday reading. We have tips prepared for children, young people, and adults alike. Our experts can also offer tips for all genres, from poetry to cartoons,’ says Service Manager Riikka Leskinen from the Kallio library.

In Kallio library, Christmas tips can be sought in Kupolisali hall on the first floor on Tuesday 12 December at 17–19:30. In Oodi, tips are given in the first floor lobby on Thursday 14 December, Monday 18 December, and Tuesday 19 December at 17–19.
