“We have already reacted to the situation snapshot by increasing the lighting and its power in Kaisaniemi Park, but there is a clear need for additional measures due to the safety situation in the park. The City of Helsinki takes the impaired safety situation of the park seriously, as experiencing a sense of security in one’s own living environment is a fundamental right of every city resident,” says Juhana Vartiainen, Mayor of Helsinki.
According to the park plan approved by the City of Helsinki’s Urban Environment Committee, the pleasantness of Kaisaniemi Park will be significantly improved in a multi-year park renovation project, which will be implemented in stages during 2022–2028. The aim is to improve the functionality of the park and repair the parts that are in poor condition.
In the renovation of the park, safety will be increased in three different ways
The most important, safety-enhancing measures in the renovation are improved lighting in the park, increased camera surveillance and cleaning green areas.
The City of Helsinki has agreed with the Helsinki Police Department to increase camera surveillance in the park. Camera surveillance will first be increased with temporary arrangements, and the park’s permanent camera surveillance solutions will be implemented in connection with the renovation project during 2024–2028.
The park’s lighting will also be improved. Lighting has already been increased at the construction site stage to improve safety and will be increased as necessary as the construction work progresses. The construction site lighting will be replaced with permanent lights later in connection with the renovation.
The city will also implement earlier some of the planned measures related to the cleaning of green areas. Some of the vegetation removals scheduled for 2025–2026 in the park plan will already be carried out in areas surrounding the pond this month.
