
On 16 April, the political parties elected to the Helsinki City Council in the recent municipal elections met to negotiate the distribution of seats. The groups unanimously agreed on the distribution of the following key positions in Helsinki’s local government:
- The next Mayor of Helsinki will be appointed from the National Coalition Party (NCP).
- The Deputy Mayor for Urban Environment will be appointed from the Social Democratics (SDP).
- The Deputy Mayor for Education will be appointed from the Greens.
- The Deputy Mayor for Culture and Leisure will be appointed from the Left Alliance.
- The Deputy Mayor for Social Service, Health Care and Rescue Services will be appointed from the NCP.
In addition, the City Council Chair will be appointed from the SDP, the first deputy chair from the NCP, and the second deputy chair from the Greens.
The Audit Committee chair will be appointed from the Finns Party.
The City Board's first deputy will be appointed from the SDP and the second deputy from the Greens.
In total, four of the people holding key positions in Helsinki’s local government during the next council term will represent the NCP, four will represent the SDP, three the Greens and three the Left Alliance. The fifteenth seat will be divided between the NCP and the Finns Party, as one party will hold the seat for the first two years and the other will assume the position for the next two years.
The deputy chair of the Urban Environment Division committee will be appointed from the NCP, the deputy chair of the Education Division Committee from the SDP, the deputy chair of the Culture and Leisure Division Committee from the Greens, and the deputy chair of the Social Services, Health Care and Rescue Services Division Committee from the Left Alliance.
Next Mayor of Helsinki appointed on 2 June
The newly elected Helsinki City Council will make its final decision on the distribution of key positions at its first meeting on 2 June. The first meeting of the council will also involve appointing a chair and two deputy chairs for the City Council, members for the City Board and its subcommittees, and members for other Division committees and their subcommittees.
The City Council meeting on 2 June will begin at 18.00 and will be livestreamed on Helsinki Channel(Link leads to external service)
Advance voting in the 2025 municipal elections was conducted in Finland from 2 to 8 April, and the official election day was on 13 April.
Results indicate that 61.1 per cent of eligible voters in Helsinki exercised their right to vote in the municipal elections.
