Helsinki to renew several outdoor exercise areas over the summer

The City will be renovating several sports fields and outdoor gyms in 2025. The infill material in artificial turf fields will be replaced with a natural alternative.

Estimated outdoor exercise area renovation schedule:

  • Kontula Sports Park 2 May–30 June

The outdoor gym at the sports park will be modernised and expanded. The new outdoor gym will feature an area intended for young people, in particular.

  • Laajasuo Sports Park 2 May–30 June                  

A new outdoor gym will be built in the park and lighting will be renewed.

  • Lauttasaari Sports Park 4 August–31 October                          

The artificial turf of the sports field will be renewed, the surface of the tracks will be renewed and the surfaces of the basketball court and the tennis practice wall will be renewed. The outdoor gym will also be modernised and expanded.

  • Munkkiniemi Sports Field 4 August–31 October

The artificial turf of the field will be renewed. The surface and hoops of the basketball court will be renewed. The outdoor gym will be modernised and expanded. In addition, lighting will also be renewed.

  • Pallomylly (Myllypuro) 18 August–31 October

The artificial turf field in Myllypuro Sports Park will be renewed and the structures of the field will be renovated.

  • Pukinmäki Sports Park 4 August–30 October

The surfaces of the tennis courts will be renewed and the piping of the artificial ice rink will be repaired. New artificial turf will be installed on the current sand-filled artificial turf field.

The renovation projects that started in the sports park earlier will be completed sometime in the spring and summer. The outdoor gym will be opened to the public in April. The sports park will also feature the first-ever outdoor gym designed for children in Helsinki, which will be completed in June. The new basketball court and the old renovated courts will be opened to the public in the spring.

  • Siltamäki Sports Park 28 April–24 July

The surface of the current rock dust baseball field will be replaced with sand-filled artificial turf and ball nets will be installed on the field. Bicycle racks and a recycling point will be added to the area.

  • Vesala Sports Park 2 May–30 June and 4 August–31 October

The surfaces of the artificial turf fields in the Vesala Sports Park will be renewed and the structures of the fields will be renovated. Artificial turf field 1 will be renovated in May and June and artificial turf field 2 will be renovated from August to October. A pickleball court will also be built on the sand field.

The sports facilities will be out of use during the renovation. Customers who book sports facilities will be notified of the service interruptions.

New artificial turf uses natural materials

The infill materials used in City-owned fields to be renewed are plant-based crushed materials, such as corn and cork. Plant-based infill materials do not contain microplastics or other substances that are harmful to the environment.

Helsinki Sports Services have earned the EcoCompass certificate for their management and development of environmental issues in keeping with the EcoCompass environmental management system. City of Helsinki Sports Services are committed to abiding by the ten EcoCompass criteria. The certificate was awarded on 5 March 2025 and it will remain valid until 5 March 2028.
