Helsinki City Council turns 150 in 2025

In 2025 will be 150 years since the first meeting of the Helsinki City Council. In the anniversary year, the history of the city's decision-making can be viewed, for example, through history articles, public lectures and short videos.

For 150 years, the City Council has handled the affairs of Helsinki residents. The members of the first Helsinki City Council were elected in an election of councillors on 22 December 1874. The 48 councillors met for the first time on 12 January 1875 under the chairmanship of Leo Mechelin.

In 2025, the 150-year-old City Council will be celebrated with, among other things, events, a video series and public lectures, where we will highlight the decision-makers and decisions of past decades.

The anniversary year also serves as a good reminder of how every city resident can influence the decisions of the City Council by voting in municipal elections and being active through the participation channels provided by the city.

Welcome to our joint anniversary year!
The full programme for the anniversary year will be released in January.
