Services for employees in change situations

The objective of transition security is to make a dismissed employee’s transition from their old job to a new one as smooth as possible. Transition security supports you through the change and enables you to take the next step in your career during the period of notice.

Helsinki Employment Services offer support and advice on what you should do if you are dismissed or laid off, as well as information on your rights when it comes to changes at the workplace. Helsinki Employment Services will also support you in the planning of employment opportunities and your job search.

As an employee, you are entitled to paid employment leave if you are dismissed for production-related or financial reasons. The duration of paid employment leave depends on the length of your period of notice.

As an employee, you may also be entitled to training or coaching promoting employment and occupational health care services for six months from the end of your obligation to work, provided that your employer regularly employs at least 30 employees, you are being dismissed for production-related or financial reasons and your employment relationship has lasted for at least five years.

Extended transition security for jobseekers aged 55 or over

Employees aged 55 or over are entitled to extended transition security services in the event of dismissal. The purpose of extended transition security for jobseekers aged 55 or over is to promote the employees’ speedy employment and improve their position on the labour market.

Employers are legally obligated to inform employees of extended transition security for jobseekers aged 55 or over.

As an employee, you are entitled to extended transition security for job seekers aged 55 or over if:

  • you turn 55 at the latest on the day of dismissal from work
  • your employment contract is terminated for production-related or economic reasons on or after 1 January 2023
  • you were employed by the employer that dismissed you for at least five years with no interruptions longer than 30 days
  • you register as a jobseeker with employment services within 60 days of being dismissed.

Extended transition security for jobseekers aged 55 or over includes:

  • transition security allowance
  • transition security training to promote quick employment and professional or entrepreneurial skills
  • an employment leave of 5, 15 or 25 days depending on the period of notice.
