A demolition and new construction project is about to begin in Puistola – demolition of the old comprehensive school demolished and the construction of a new school. This also includes the school’s sports hall, which will also be replace with a new one.
Before the project begins, the construction site will be cordoned off. Work is primarily carried out on weekdays from 7 am to 6 pm. There is a possibility of dusting and noise nuisance in the surrounding environment. Traffic to the construction site will pas through Karjuniitynkuja. Road signs will be used to indicate possible changes in traffic arrangements.
The demolition project is planned to be completed in late August of 2025, after which preliminary construction work will begin on the plot. Construction of the new school building will begin in spring 2026, and the facility will be completed by the end of 2028. The construction project will also improve the nearby street areas and the parking areas of the sports park.
The school will operate in temporary facilities during the construction project
In January 2025, Puistola comprehensive school moved to temporary facilities in Suuntimopuisto. Nurkka daycare centre and playground will continue to operate in their current premises (Nurkkatie 2) until the completion of the new building, at which point they will move to Koudantie.
A separate temporary facility will not be available for the Puistola sports hall for the duration of the demolition and new construction project – the sports hall's shifts will be transferred to other sports facilities. The outdoor fields should remain available throughout the project. A temporary pavilion is planned on the south side of the sports park, with changing rooms, showers and toilets, as well as maintenance facilities.
A decision was made to replace the old school with a new building, because it suffers from numerous issues that were considered neither financially nor technically feasible to repair.
The main contractor for the project will be Helsinki City Construction Services (Stara), a municipal enterprise operated by the city.
