This spring, the City of Helsinki will once again be commissioning an occurrence study of the Siberian flying squirrel. To support the study, the City is now collecting sightings of Siberian flying squirrels from Helsinki residents.

The most likely place to find Siberian flying squirrel droppings is under the largest spruce or aspen of a forest stand. You can see the currently known Siberian flying squirrel core areas in Helsinki in the City's map service. However, what the City is now looking for is sightings of droppings outside of these areas. Siberian flying squirrel droppings found in the known core areas do not need to be reported.
Sightings can be reported as follows:
- New sightings of yellow droppings the size of grains of rice or live Siberian flying squirrels can be reported to Environmental Services by sending a free-form email to ari.turula@hel.fi(Link opens default mail program) . Please use the subject line ”Liito-orava”. If possible, please include a map of where you made the sighting; you can also include the street address or some other exact positioning data. You can also send in photographs.
- Sightings can also be reported directly on the Finnish Museum of Natural History’s Laji.fi(Link leads to external service) website.
