Johanneksenpuisto Park, located in Punavuori, was built in the 1910s according to a design by Helsinki City Gardener Svante Olsson. A renovation project paying homage to the historical value of the park is now set to begin.
New shrubs and trees as well as vegetation groups consisting of many different species will be planted in the park. The design of the new plants will imitate the original 1910s style. The original rock gardens on the sloped section will be surrounded by vegetation, just like in Olsson’s design. The lowest level of the hilly park, which is bordered by walls, will receive a new design with perennial plants.
Play area to serve children of many ages going forward
During the renovation project, play areas built in Johanneksenpuisto in the 1980s will be repaired. The entire lower level play area and its fences and equipment will be renewed. The upper level play area will be made more versatile to allow children of different ages to find fun things to do there.
The park features walls from several periods. The natural stone wall built in the 1910s located on the side of the park with the kiosk will be rebuilt using the existing stones. The shape of the stone slab wall in the Johanneksenkenttä end will be changed and the wall will be elevated to allow for the grass slope next to Yrjönkatu to be made less steep. Other walls will also be renovated.
All park corridors, steps and the play area in the park will be illuminated as part of the renovation project.
The field in the park, which is also used as an artificial ice rink, was already renovated in the earlier stages of the renovation project. In addition to this, a new maintenance and changing room building was built in the park.
Before embarking on the construction project in early summer, the hollow crack willow plagued by the willow bracket will be cut down in February or March at the corner of Laivurinrinne and Johanneksentie. During the time, there is no parking in the parking spaces near the tree. Also one birch, which is in bad condition, will be felled.
According to estimates, the renovation project will be completed in June 2026.
